❌EXCESS PROTEIN IS JUST EXTRA CALORIES?
I was once under the impression that if you overeat in any capacity, even if the excess calories came only from protein, that fat would automatically be gained.
🔬THE SCIENCE:
Female physique athletes ingested either high protein or low protein for 8-weeks (telling them to not change their CHO or FAT intakes). The high protein group increased their caloric intake by 250 calories above maintenance levels (all in the form of protein) and ingested more than 400 calories more than the low protein group.
Despite this increase in caloric intake from protein, the high protein group lost a significant amount of fat! The low protein group, who actually decreased their caloric intake and were eating less calories than the high protein group did not lose fat. (Campbell et al., 2018).
💪🏽HOW MUCH PROTEIN IS TOO MUCH THOUGH?
1.2-1.6g/kg/day = General health.
1.6-2.2g/kg/day = Athletes/Muscle Growth/Body Fat Reduction.
The upper limit is in fact, MUCH higher than these values, and is not associated with health complications - @thealanaragon

💥TAKEAWAY:
I am not saying that if one overeats they will not gain fat. What I am saying is that if one is weight training and they increase only their protein intake, the available scientific literature suggests that this results in INCREASED fat loss.
