This may shock you… Cold showers are super healthy. But there are times you should avoid taking one.

Key Facts

Here’s why…

Your body has two branches of the autonomic nervous system…

·      Parasympathetic (Rest, Sex, Digest)

·      Sympathetic (Fight, Flight, Attack, Survival mode)

When you have a cold shower, you are activating the Sympathetic nervous system.

This triggers the release of noradrenaline, which may impair digestive enzyme secretions (King et al.,1999).

In simpler words, it weakens the system that absorbs and takes out all the needed nutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, lipids) from the food to fuel your body.

In result, you won’t get all the benefits from the food you just consumed. It also can cause gas, bloating, constipation, and more.

It’s important to avoid taking a cold shower before and after a big meal, as this may harm your digestion.

We want to activate the Parasympathetic nervous system as much as possible before and after eating. Doing so ensures proper breakdown of our food, reduced bloating, leaky gut, etc. (Jones et al., 2005)

But other than that…

Cold Showers Are Still Super Healthy

While they may not be the most enjoyable experiences, cold showers provide you with great benefits…

·      Reducing inflammation

·      Enhancing immunity

·      Assisting fat loss

·      Promotes a mood rush.

In the long run, cold showers are extremely beneficial to support your radiant health.

Next time when heading for a shower, try a cold one! Try it a few times and see how you feel.

But if you simply can’t handle cold showers every day and love your hot showers too much…
